Headaches: Common Types and How Chiropractic Care May Help

Understanding Headaches

One of the most common conditions our offices see come through the doors is individuals suffering from headaches. Almost everyone reading this can likely relate to having a headache at some point in life. What most people do not realize is that there are many different types of headaches.

While the list ranges to more than 200 different types, there are three main headache categories we commonly see in our offices. Below is a breakdown of those types, followed by how Carolina Chiropractic Plus can help decrease headache frequency and support long-term prevention.

Headache relief

Tension Headaches

Tension headaches are often felt throughout the entire head and may create a dull, aching sensation. These headaches are commonly accompanied by tenderness in the neck and shoulders. Tension headaches often occur during periods of high stress and may also be related to posture, muscle tension, and daily strain.

Migraine Headaches

Migraine headaches can leave you feeling completely disabled, often causing sensitivity to light, nausea, vomiting, and throbbing pain. Migraines can last for days, and we have helped many patients who felt unable to function normally due to the severity of their symptoms.

Migraines are commonly reported more often in women than men and can be triggered by stress, hormones, lack of sleep, certain foods, and environmental factors.

Post-Traumatic Headaches

As an office that frequently sees patients after auto accidents and sports injuries, we also see many post-traumatic headaches. These headaches can develop after a head, neck, or whiplash-related injury and may last anywhere from several weeks to several months depending on the severity of the trauma and how quickly treatment begins.

What causes frequent headaches? Frequent headaches can develop from several factors including stress, muscle tension, poor posture, dehydration, sleep disruption, inflammation, and dysfunction in the neck. A thorough evaluation helps determine what may be driving your symptoms.

Can chiropractic care help with headache prevention? Yes. Many recurring headaches are linked to physical stressors such as neck tension, restricted joint movement, poor posture, and muscle imbalance.
