Clinical Picture & Causes of Neuropathy

Neuropathy is a disorder of the nerves and is generally caused by some sort of infection, illness, or injury. The most common types of neuropathy include:

  • Diabetic neuropathy (damage to nerves secondary to poor blood sugar control)
  • Peripheral neuropathy (damage to nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord)
  • Focal neuropathy (damage to one specific nerve or group of nerves) 

Signs & Symptoms of Neuropathy

Pain is one hallmark symptom of neuropathy. It's often described as burning, sharp, shooting, stabbing, or electric. 

Additional symptoms of neuropathy that may present include:

  • Numbness, tingling, or "pins and needles" sensation
  • Weakness and muscle wasting (in later stages) of the muscles innervated by damaged nerves
  • Decreased movement and range of motion of affected limbs (e.g., foot drop)
  • Altered reflexes
